Wystarczy tylko, aby licencja pozwalała na ich wolne wykorzystywanie.
Skądinąd nawet OSM nie ogranicza się tylko do tras wyznaczanych przez ochotników — niedawno udało się ukończyć import wielkiej bazy TIGER. Początkowo ilość danych sugerowała zakończenie procedury gdzieś w maju lub czerwcu, ale dzięki wprowadzeniu techniki tzw. quadtiles (związanej z dzieleniem mapy na kwadratowe sektory) już jest po wszystkim.
Plany OAM są dużo szersze: założyciel projektu, Christopher Schmidt, chciałby zbudować bogaty serwis sieciowy typu GIS. Na razie na tle widoku z nieba można włączać podgląd dodatkowej warstwy OSM, dzięki czemu mamy rodzaj hybrydowej mapy znanej choćby z Google Maps. Skala fotografii i ilość dróg nie jest oczywiście tak dobra jak w komercyjnych odpowiednikach, ale pamiętajmy, że dane z OSM/OAM pozwalają na znacznie bardziej swobodne i twórcze wykorzystywanie — i to niekoniecznie tylko w sieci — oraz nie powodują ścisłej zależności od usługodawcy.
Miłośnicy GIS na wolnych licencjach nie muszą czekać na dalszy rozwój OAM. Istnieją już chociażby takie aplikacje tego typu jak Quantum GIS, GRASS, OSSIM czy uDig.

Natomiast odpowiednikiem Google Earth (czyli z interfejsem 3D) na wolnych licencjach jest World Wind:

Nie sprawdziłem tylko jak jest z możliwością uruchomienia pod Linuksem czegoś, co korzysta z tych danych, bo sam WW został napisany nieprzenośnie (DirectX i .NET).

gdyby nie sposob licencjonowania narzucony przez google – mialbym wygodna automape w telefonie z obsluga gps (mgmaps rulu), bo ich aplikacja (choc o bardzo wygodnym interface) niestety nie obsluguje gps (a bylo by to banalne do dodania w tej javowej aplikacji…)
