Dell jest firmą, która za jedną z głównych zalet swoich produktów wymieniała zawsze korzystanie ze standardowych komponentów i nieużywanie własnych zamkniętych rozwiązań. Michael Dell zawsze był dumny, że udało mu się osiągnąć sukces bez uciekania się do nieuczciwych metod, opierając się jedynie na zadowoleniu klienta.
Najwyraźniej coś się zmieniło w ostatnich latach i Dell zapomniał o swoich chlubnych początkach.
Wraz z wydaniem nowego urządzenia z serii Dell Mini, firma zadebiutowała na rynku urządzeń pracujących pod kontrolą systemu operacyjnego Android. Nic w tym dziwnego – system stworzony przez Google jest jedną z najciekawszych propozycji dla urządzeń przenośnych.
O ile sam Android wydany jest na licencji Apache, która daje dużą dowolność w użyciu i modyfikacji oprogramowania, to do obsługi niskopoziomowej sprzętu używa jądra Linux. Licencja na której wydany jest Linux, to Powszechna Licencja GNU – GPL. GPL również daje dużą swobodę w użyciu i modyfikacji oprogramowania, pod jednym właściwie warunkiem – razem z binarnym oprogramowaniem musisz dostarczyć jego źródła, pozwalające na własnoręczne zbudowanie tego samego pliku binarnego.
To właśnie wymaganie Dell ma głęboko w nosie. Premiera Dell Streak (wcześniej Dell Mini 5) miała miejsce 4 czerwca 2010. Od tamtej pory Dell jest absolutnie głuchy na prośby użytkowników, którzy zakupili urządzenia Streak, o udostępnienie źródeł kernela Linuksa którego używają.
Scenariusze postępowania są dwa: Jeśli da się klienta zignorować, np. nie odpisując na e-mail, czy wiadomość, to jest ignorowany. Jeśli zaś klient zadzwoni do pomocy technicznej i nie da się go zignorować, to otrzymuje prośbę o pozostawienie danych kontaktowych i zapewnienie o kontakcie po uzyskaniu informacji. Teraz wystarczy nie oddzwonić.
Wiele firm łamało już licencję GPL i korzystało z pracy setek wolontariuszy, nie dając nic w zamian, jednak chyba żadna nie robiła tego dotąd tak jawnie jak Dell, śmiejąc się ze swojego własnego motto.

Stosowanie standardowych komponentów? Wolne żarty! Powiedzcie to modderom, którzy kilka godzin rozpracowywali omomierzem 25-pinowe podłączenie front-panelu (power, power LED, HDD LED, reset) do płyty głównej pierwszych komputerków w obudowach slim. Ja to jeszcze pamiętam. Później laptopy z egzotycznymi matrycami, które można było spotkać tylko w… analogicznym Compaq’u, czy DVD do laptopa wymagające w przypadku wymiany do działania interwencji lutownicą na bodajże 2 czy 3 ostatnich pinach.
+podobna sytuacja z zasilaczami/gniazdami zasilacza
Jeżeli cokolwiek, to Dell zawsze kojarzył mi się z niestandardowymi komponentami.
I niskiej jakosci wykonaniem.
Uzasadnij. Sam mam Dell Latitude E4300 i nie mogę narzekać na jakość wykonania. Podobnie Vostro i mainstreamowe Studio.
Latitude XPi i jego matryca „puknij tylko palcem coś chcąc pokazać, a rozwalisz”. Poza tym jakościowo naprawdę nie widziałem większych problemów poza matołectwem montażowym w dziedzinie nie używania podkładek izolacyjnych tam, gdzie by się przydały (nie metalizowane otwory).
no no jak kolega sieci na Pentium 150 to szacun
Jak się sprawuje na tym KDE?
Na penwno lepiej niż nie jeden windows.
Mój Dell Latitude E6500 jest naprawdę dobrze wykonany – dobre mocowanie matrycy (nie chwieje się), świetnej jakości LED-owy ekran z dobrym kontrastem i dużą maksymalną jasnością (i wcale od żadnego pukania w ekran nic mu się nie dzieje), a do tego jest cichy i chłodny mimo mocnego procka (P8600). Naprawdę, nie ma się do czego przyczepić. No, chyba że do głośniczków kiepskiej jakości (jak w prawie każdym laptopie), nieoświetlonego wejścia na słuchawki (w ciemności nie widać) i kiepskiego Trackpointa (nie używam, wolę touchpady). Ale to wszystko drobiazgi.
a moj Dell XPS M1330 nie dosc ze sie grzeje to jeszcze zaczal korodowac (tyle jesli chodzi o aluminiowe elementy).
O XPS-ach/Studio to dużo złych rzeczy słyszałem, ale seria Latitude się chyba dość dobrze trzyma.

Czyste aluminium utlenia się i to dość szybko. Jest jeszcze dyraluminium (stop). Czyste aluminium jest bardzo kruche więc generalnie stosuje się to drugie.
Mam XPSa prawie 3 lata i nic nie koroduje ani nic się nie wytarło. A używany intensywnie jako główne narzędzie do pracy. Jedyne co było słabe w XPSach to, że nie można wyłączyć ładowarki baterii jak w Vostro. Przez to akumulator już nie trzyma 5h jak na początku tylko 3.
Dodam jeszcze pamięci RAM – niby DIM, ale pozamieniane wyprowadzenia, standardowe nie pasują a oryginalne 10x droższe od zwykłych – spotkałem się z tym 5-8 lat temu, nie wiem jak jest teraz.
Uzywam serwerow Dell’a od ponad 8 lat i nigdy sie z niczym takim nie spotkalem. O jakich seriach produktow mowisz?

to pokaz mi zrodla do qualcommowych podzespolow uzywanych w androidzie np. przez htc, chodzi mi o „radio”, sterownik do grafiki 3d itd.

). za pewne wiesz ze sie linkuja z binarna biblioteka – chodzi mi wlasnie o zrodla tej biblioteki…
btw. ja na zrodla kernela pod htc hero na prawde sporo czekalem, zarowno pod androida 1.5, jak i pozniej pod 2.1 (lag byl na prawde solidny wzgledem wydania sprzetu/oprogramowania).
Moduł do jądra z oficjalnych sterowników nVidii jest, zgodnie z wymogami GPL, jak najbardziej otwarty.
Dopiero ten moduł odwołuje się do zamkniętego sterownika.
Widzę tutaj duże niezrozumienie tematu…

@janc – jedną kwestią jest czy dany moduł zostanie kiedykolwiek włączony do oficjalnego kernela a inną czy dany moduł łamie licencje GPL czy nie.
W linku którym zamieściłeś Linus sam nie jest w stanie jednoznacznie stwierdzić czy drivery napisane z myślą o innym systemie operacyjnym są pracą pochodną czy nie.
W przypadku sterowników nVidia-i, jeśli jest tak jak pisze oO i dodatkowo zamknięty sterownik jest w przestrzeni użytkownika, to o łamaniu GPL nie ma mowy.
Nie jest.
Moduł nvidii nie jest otwarty i znaczy (taints) kernel. Jedyne co ma dostępne źródła to warstwa glue pozwalająca skleić 10MB (sic!) bloba nv-kernel.o z resztą kernela.

A gdzie się ustawia aby chrome korzystał z tego wbudowanego czytnika pdfów a nie z zewnętrznych programów ?
Wszelkie próby wyświetlenia pdfa w chromie kończą się odpaleniem w osobnym oknie okulara albo xpdfa (w zależności od tego który z nich jest ustawiony jako domyślny systemowy czytnik pdfów).
Pewnie pomyliłeś miejsce, w którym pisałeś, ale pozwól że odpowiem na pytanie:

Odpalenie produktu i obsłużenie potencjalnych dziesiątek czy setek tysięcy klientów jest nieco ważniejsze, niż zadolenie 5 entuzjastów, którzy chcą zobaczyć źródła z powodu „BO TAK KCEM”.
Nie wyobrażam sobie, by taka firma liczyła na to, że sprawa ucichnie i ujdzie im łamanie GPL na sucho. Wiem że jest w końcu masa ludzi, którzy nic innego nie mają do roboty, ale FSF sobie poradzi, nie trzeba chyba im pomagać grożąc pozwami i rewoltami.
Czyżby Dell potrzebował do tego powołać, w swoim Pionie do Kontaktów z Klientami, Departament Relacji z Klientami, w nim Wydział Relacji z Klientami Zainteresowanymi Publikacją Źródeł i w końcu, stosując spychanie odpowiedzialności, Dział Strategicznych Publikacji dla Upierdliwych Klientów? (;
Który to musiał być zatwierdzony przez radę nadzorczą większością głosów.
Tak serio, nie zdziwiłbym się gdyby musiało to przejść przez dział prawny, QA, musiałby być zrobiony review całego kodu zmienionego, by np. nie poszły w świat metody/składowe michaelDellIsAnAsshole czy fuckMicrosoft lub inne ciekawostki w komentarzach, bądź ukryte funkcje narażające userów na niebezpieczeństwo. Pracowałem w „korporejszon”, to naprawdę, nie zdziwiłoby mnie to.
